Recalling Henry St.

This website is intended primarily, but not exclusively, for those who worked in - or were associated in any way with - Radio Éireann, prior to the relocation to Montrose in the mid 1970s. Basically it is hoped it will become a repository for memories, stories, legends, reminiscences, arguments, debates, images, etc, etc, not just solely concerning the headquarters at Henry Street, but also the outlier studios and the many other locations that were frequented in those times. To develop and grow it needs your contributions and all will be gratefully received through the 'contact' page.

Fragments from the Long Corridor

A thing that was invariably remarked on by first-time visitors to the headquarters of Radio Éireann on the 3rd floor of the GPO at Henry Street, was the extensive length of the corridor. For one, it seemed to be longer than an outside view of the building suggested, causing one to wonder did it continue into and right through those adjacent buildings beyond? For another, it momentarily raised a doubt about what had been taught in Geometry classes concerning parallel lines never meeting. Following a visit there in the late 1960s, in her column in the Sunday Times the novelist Jilly Cooper wrote that as she walked along it she passed between 'men with high noble foreheads' who stood in discussion. A lot of us could make a good stab at identifying who they probably were! read more
